The Swedish captain of the Ottawa Senators, Daniel Alfredsson, has signed a four-year contract extension to remain with the National Hockey League club, team owner Eugene Melnyk announced Thursday.

The deal, worth a reported $22 million, likely ensures the 35-year-old right winger will complete his NHL career playing only for Canada's capital city.

"It's an exciting time for our family to know that we'll be able to spend the rest of my NHL career in Ottawa," Alfredsson said.

Alfredsson, in his 10th season as captain, has three goals and six assists this season and leads all Senators forward with more than 21 minutes on the ice every night.

"Daniel is the type of person and player that we want to continue building this franchise around," Senators general manager Bryan Murray said.

Alfredsson has all-time club records with 334 goals, 522 assists and 861 games played. The five-time NHL All-Star helped Sweden win Olympic gold in 2006.

"Daniel's leadership and on-ice skills make him one of the best all-around players in the NHL and I'm delighted that he will remain an integral part of the Senators," Melnyk said.
