US Army redeploying troops to Germany
The US Army is moving soldiers from its base in Vicenza, Italy to bases in Germany as part of an ongoing restructuring initiative set to finish in 2013, spokesman Richard Spiegel told The Local on Thursday.
“It just makes more operational sense to have them here,” Spiegel said of Company G, 52nd Aviation Regiment, which mainly transports VIP passengers in the four aircraft they are bringing to Germany. “It only affects a small number of people,” he added.
Along with the two C-12 aircraft and two UH60 Black Hawk helicopters, the total US Army population in Germany will increase by approximately 213, which includes 85 soldiers and 128 family members going to bases in both Stuttgart and Mannheim.
“Some families have already moved based on individual circumstances like the school year and the availability of moving companies,” Spiegel said.
The military calls such moves “transformation initiatives,” which, along with actions like base closures, are moving towards the consolidation of US Army forces to six permanent sites – Grafenwöhr, Baumholder, Wiesbaden, Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart in Germany, and another base in Vicenza, Italy.
Other recent components of the transformation include moving an entire brigade from Schweinfurt to Grafenwöhr, and base closures in the Hanau area, Spiegel said.
