Berlin’s professional basketball team Alba Berlin is reportedly looking to lure German NBA star Dirk Nowitzki away from Dallas.

The team in the German capital has long been one of the country’s best, but manager Marco Baldi told the Berlin Morgenpost on Tuesday that Alba had its sights on becoming a European power over the next couple of years. To that end, the team needed a star like Germany’s best-known basketball player Nowitzki.

“Let’s say it this way: there’s a certain logic that could lead Dirk Nowitzki – who lives his commitment to his homeland and doesn’t just talk about it – and us together,” Baldi told the paper. “However, probably not for two or three years.”

Baldi said European basketball had come along way in recent years in catching up with the United States in quality of play, which meant it was only a matter of time before European teams could compete with NBA for the sport’s best players like Nowitzki.

“I believe in the not too distant future a European club will make transfer coup. A whole lot has changed,” he said. “What the NBA can’t allow is for a key figure like Kobe Bryant or LeBron James to leave the boat.”
