One in five female managers in Sweden has been harassed on account of her gender, while only three percent of male managers have suffered the same treatment.

Most common is the harassment of women in male-dominated workplaces, where every fourth woman is subject to persecution by superiors or co-workers.

Twelve percent of female managers have been victimized by other managers or co-workers, compared with six percent of male managers.

The figures come from a stud carried out by Statistics Sweden (SCB) for the Unionen labour organization and published on Wednesday.

Unionen’s newly elected chair Cecilia Fahlberg commented on the study in an article in Dagens Nyheter.

“It’s safe to conclude that the male domination of management-level positions sustains masculine values; that it’s difficult for women to gain access to male networks. This applies not least to women with ambitions to break down these values and practice another style of leadership than that which is most common,” writes Fahlberg.

The study is based on interviews with nearly 800 managers in private industry within the framework of SCB’s workforce investigations. The study doesn’t specific how many of the managers surveyed are women.
