German state health insurance providers have rejected coverage of medical marijuana with a doctor’s prescription, daily Passauer Neuen Presse reported on Monday.

The prescription and use of medical cannabis will be rejected from insurance coverage until further studies prove its usefulness, according to a statement cited by the paper from the GKV association of state insurers. The news comes ahead of a Wednesday meeting between insurers and members of the Green party and the Left party, who advocate relaxed restrictions for medical marijuana.

The two parties claim that marijuana helps patients suffering with illnesses like HIV, multiple sclerosis, cancer and chronic pain. But the GKV told the paper that changes to current rules for cannabis use are not justified with medical research.
