Poll: Swedes back government handling of crisis

Swedish voters have given a resounding expression of support for the government and the Riksbank for their handling of the financial crisis so far, a new poll from Synovate published in Dagens Nyheter shows.

Seven out of ten voters would however like to see a cross-party cooperation including opposition parties to work towards finding a solution to the ongoing financial crisis and credit freeze.

The Riksbank's actions in dealing with the international crisis gained the support of 65 percent of respondents in the poll. The government was backed by 47 percent. A total of 35 percent expressed low confidence in the government's actions so far.

Fredrik Reinfeldt's Moderates were backed by 35 percent of respondents as the party best equipped to manage the crisis. Mona Sahlin's Social Democrats were backed by 29 percent of voters.

Dagens Nyheter writes however that voters generally have little confidence in the ability of politicians to tackle the crisis. A full 10 percent of voters replied that "no party is better than the others". One third were uncertain over which party they felt were most capable of managing the crisis.

However, 72 percent of voters would like to see a broad cross-party cooperation to include opposition parties in dealing with the crisis. Only 19 percent think that the government, which has hitherto dismissed calls for a summit with opposition parties, should continue to act alone.

The Synovate poll interviewed 1,016 people on October 8th and 9th.
