New arrest in Tobago double murder case
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a Swedish couple on the southern Caribbean island of Tobago. Two men now remain in police custody on suspicion of the killings.
A pair of rubber boots found at the scene are reported to be of help to police investigating the murders of 62-year-old Anna Sundsvall and 73-year-old Åke Alsoon at their holiday home in the Bon Accord area of west Tobago on Thursday morning.
Police believe that the boots were worn by the murderer and could be a valuable clue in the investigation.
"Forensics are working with the issue as we speak," said Crown Point police officer Fitzroy Frederick to news agency TT.
The relationship of the 28-year-old suspect to the 32-year-old man arrested on Saturday is not clear, neither is his connection to the Swedish couple. Both men deny the allegations against them.
Police are working to establish a connection between the rubber boots to the arrested men and Frederick is optimistic that the murder case can be resolved.
Police were able to arrest the 32-year-old with the help of witness testimony and a sketch artist.
He has been interrogated by police but has made no admission of guilt.
Police are continuing the investigation with the DNA testing and evaluation of evidence recovered at the murder scene.
"We have made some progress in the case," Frederick said late on Saturday evening.
Among other things police have set up a hot line and several potential witnesses have been in touch.
Anna Sundsvall and Åke Alsoon were found brutally murdered at their holiday home on Thursday morning.
The couple had bought the home four years ago and according to local police divided their time between Sweden and Tobago. The house lies on the south-western tip of the island of Tobago in the picturesque area of Bon Accord.
The alarm was sounded by a security guard patrolling the area when she heard screams.
Police arrived at the scene with emergency staff and found Sundsvall already dead. Alsoon was barely alive and was rushed to Scarborough Regional Hospital where he later died.
The circumstances indicate that the murders occurred in connection with a burglary. A safe was found bust open in the couple's house.
According to the newspaper Trinidad & Tobago Express, 420 people have now been murdered in the country so far this this year, four of whom on the island of Tobago.
