Record crowds greet Kivik apple market

The warm late summer weather contributed to record crowds as Kivik's apple market opened on Saturday. The centre piece of the market was an artwork entirely from apples made by local artist Emma Karp Lundström.

All roads lead to Kivik as the year's apple harvest is celebrated in traditional style in the southern Sweden fishing village with the market.

Record numbers of cars clogged up roads and paths and fields were lined with locals and visitors alike equipped with blankets and picnic baskets.

The market has become increasingly popular in recent years and the event, the last of the summer season in Österlen - the area of Skåne to the east of the Ystad-Kristianstad road to Brösarp, is starting to rival the Easter open studios week as an attraction.

There is an art theme to the market with the traditional apple sculpture that is erected at its heart each year. This year's work by Emma Karp Lundström is entitled "After Frans Floris Pomona" and uses 35,000 apples on its 104 square metre canvas. Some 70,000 nails hold the nine apple varieties in place.

The harbour area of Kivik was thriving with people and their canine friends on Saturday browsing the stalls laden with apples, of course, but also juices, ciders and other fruit from the region.

Entertainment was provided by local band Rockis & Poppis, Sonja Aldén and the Tomelilla youth orchestra.

The market continues on Sunday with entertainment until mid-afternoon.
