The quick pitch

With 30 ski lifts and 51 runs, Vemdalen is comprised of three ski areas: Björnrike, Vemdalsskalet and Klövsjö/Storhogna. The three resorts, while offering their own individual charm, are conveniently covered under one ski pass.

Vemdalen is an ideal option for families, in particular Björnrike, which offers a brand new playroom and plenty of gentle, uncrowded slopes.

“It has great snow conditions, fantastic views and lots of activities to keep the family happy - without the crowds,” Anne-Christine Westlund from tourist agency Destination Vemdalen told The Local.

Holiday-makers with luxurious tastes can splash out and stay at Storhogna Högfjällshotell & Spa, which boasts first class accommodation, spa facilities and an excellent restaurant.

Vemdalen does however have more to offer than just family fun and luxurious spas; the higher mountainous areas around Vemdalsskalet offer great challenges for the expert skier and freestylers can practise their moves in either of the two terrain parks.

Furthermore, over 70km of prepared Nordic skiing tracks link the three resorts, with an additional 180km of routes to be found in the local area. In recent years, Vemdalen has invested extensively in snow-making technology and can guarantee the white stuff from December18th to April 19th.

The short Swedish winter days also need not be a deterrent, with night skiing available on 10 floodlit slopes.

In their own words

Björnrike: "Comfortable and close...no wonder Björnrike is so popular with families".

Vemdalsskalet: "What an extraordinary make-over...A brand new ski area on Mount Skalsfjället; new comfortable apartments have added to the options at the classic Högfjällshotellet and the nightlife is getting even hotter".

Storhogna: "Glittering snowscapes; alpine skiing, cross-country and tour skiing, combined with delicious spa life…"

Klövsjö: "The prettiest mountain village in Sweden".
