Vacationers land in Frankfurt after ‘Ike’ hits Cuba

A total of 176 Germans vacationing in Cuba landed in Frankfurt on Friday morning after the Caribbean island was slammed by hurricane ‘Ike’ this week.

“They are extremely exhausted after the 12-hour trip,” said Thomas Cook spokeswoman Nina Kreke, adding they would receive counseling to deal with the shock of the destructive storm.

Thomas Cook and TUI evacuated 238 holidaymakers on the flight. One Austrian man was admitted to the airport’s hospital for exhaustion.

Hurricane ‘Ike’ left at least five people dead in Cuba and the storm is now threatening the coast of Texas. The US National Weather Service said people on Galveston Island faced “certain death” from flooding if they did not evacuate their homes.
