Will parking stripes end the sign chaos? Photo: DPA

Germans in some states could start parking their cars like Americans soon. The country's national committee of traffic regulation has agreed to a pilot program modelled on US-style street markings instead of signs, according to daily Bild on Wednesday.

But the committee is bickering about the colours that will mark parking spaces, the paper reports.

The state of Baden-Württemberg wants rockin’ white stripes, while Berlin wants blue stripes modelled after New York City’s lines. Hamburg, however, prefers yellow parking markings.

Meanwhile Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee’s Federal Highway Research Institute (BAST) has suggested using red as the official "no parking" colour.

But Bild reported the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein apparently don’t want to try out the pilot program paint at all, potentially leading to confused German drivers parking in different states.
