A 63-year-old woman was found in the water in Frisksjön in Västervik county shortly after 10pm on Friday evening. Emergency staff that pulled the body from the lake could immediately conclude that she had sustained injuries to her body and legs that indicated a crime.

Initial suspicions were confirmed by a forensic examination conducted by a medical examiner at the scene. The examiner was unable to immediately establish either the cause of death or for how long the woman had been dead.

The body will be subject to further forensic examination on Tuesday.

Several hours after the discovery of the body police arrested the 63-year-old victim's husband, on suspicion of murder.

"The injuries to the woman's body, the technical examination and details from the interrogation implicate the man," said Sven-Erik Karlsson at Kalmar county police.

Police on Sunday were not willing to divulge either the nature of the woman's injuries or whether they were sustained with some form of weapon.

The couple were resident in the area and this aided police in both identifying the body and with initial investigations.
