Bankrupt builder may sue Ibrahimovic for millions
A contract dispute between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a bankrupt building company could result in a lawsuit against the Swedish football star.
According to administrators handling the bankruptcy of Malmö-based ARX Bygg, Ibrahimovic owes the company 5 million kronor ($778,000).
The dispute stems from renovations to the 30 million kronor house Ibrahimovic owns with his girlfriend Helena Seger.
Work on the mansion is so behind schedule that a contract between the company and the couple has been scrapped, and Ibrahimovic has refused to pay the bill for the work completed thus far.
“If the company judges this to be an outstanding claim, I think that is correct, we’ll launch a process to get [the money] in,” said bankruptcy administrator Peter Thörnwall to the Byggvärlden magazine, a trade publication for the Swedish construction industry.
He now plans to review the contract and investigate whether the breaking of the agreement happened in the appropriate manner.
Even since it became clear that the renovations weren’t going to be completed on time, Ibrahimovic has refused to pay and work on the villa ground to a halt.
While the international footballer blames ARX Bygg for the delay, the company’s temporary CEO claims that the problem rests with the couple’s ever-changing demands.
“They’ve made so many additional orders that it’s caused things to take a long time,” Tore Hansen told Byggvärlden.
ARX Bygg AB filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, but it remains unclear what role, if any, Ibrahimovic’s unpaid bill may have on the proceedings.
According to the company’s filing, ARX Bygg has debts totaling 14 million kronor.
In a statement to the Sydsvenskan newspaper, Ibrahimovic and Seger said they regret the development but expressed their hope that the work on the house would soon begin again.
The couple also declined to comment on “additional speculation”.
