Legendary opera singer Plácido Domingo is returning to Berlin this spring, Die Welt reported on Thursday. The world-renowned tenor will be back at the Berlin State Opera (Staatsoper Unter den Linden) this March to perform "Parsifal."

Domingo will assume the starring role in Richard Wagner's "Parcifal" in early March in place of Nikolai Schukoff, according to the paper. Domingo has appeared in Berlin on several occasions, including his first performance in 1967 at the German National Opera (Deutsche Oper) and in 1993 at the State Opera.

The paper also reported that a successor to former opera director Peter Mussbach has been named to orchestrate the return.

Two vacancies which opened after Director Peter Mussbach's resignation were also filled. Direction pair Nigel Lowery of the United Kingdom and Amir Hosseinpour of Iran will stage a production of Joseph Haydn's opera "Orlando Paladino," which opens on May 8, 2009 under the musical direction of René Jacob. Haydns "Armida," under Mussbach's direction, had originally been planned for this date.
