David Sjöblom was apprehended along with a 37-year-old man who escaped from the same psychiatric clinic in Säter in central Sweden at the end of July. A 21-year-old woman was also arrested.

Police found Sjöblom's car after they were alerted to a break-in at a garage in Norberg. They were quickly able to locate the escapee and his companions.

Sjöblom disappeared from the grounds of the clinic in Säter during an hour's unsupervised leave on Sunday.

He was convicted in 1997 for the murder of an elderly woman and has never before attempted to escape.

The clinic's security coordinator Lillemor Lövström was relieved to hear that Sjöblom had been found.

"We hope he'll be coming back here soon and we're pleased that nothing much more serious happened, since the police considered him dangerous," he said.

Lövström added that Sjöblom would be denied unsupervised leave for a period to be decided on by doctors and the county court.

"That means he won't be allowed to leave the ward," she said.
