The biggest German power company, EON, will cut 1,800 jobs in Germany as it reorganises its distribution network, a senior executive said on Wednesday.

The company plans to regroup six of its seven regional units, Klaus-Dieter Maubach told the daily Die Welt.

“From 60 sites at present there should be no more than 20 in the future,” Maubach said. The site reduction will lead to the loss of 1,800 posts from a total of 15,000.

“No one will be laid off,” stressed the head of EON’s Energie unit. “We are counting, among other things, on people taking early retirement.” The move should allow EON to save several million euros as it faces stiff competition in the German energy market.
