A woman was seriously injured and a man sustained minor injuries as their "gyrocopter" home-made aircraft crashed in Upplands-Bro, north of Stockholm at around midday on Saturday.

The two injured aviators were rushed in an ambulance helicopter to Karolinska University Hospital in Solna according to Hans Wiksten at Stockholm police.

"Both were conscious and capable of speech when we arrived at the scene. One was adjudged to have more serious injuries, but neither of them have life-threatening injuries," said Wiksten.

According to Stefan Johansson at the ARCC air rescue service in Gothenburg, the cause of the accident is as yet unclear. But the gyrocopter - a small experimental aircraft - is reported to have flown into a tree and crashed landed.

"It is some sort of experimental home-made construction."

"The gyrocopter is classified as an aircraft. Instead of wings it has a rotor that generates air and there is a propeller at the rear which gives it forward motion. It resembles a helicopter when airborne, but a helicopter gets its forward motion from the main rotor," said Johansson.
