Boom time for Swedish fast food restaurants

Sweden's cafes and fast food restaurants have increased their turnover by almost eight percent during the year's first quarter compared to the same period last year, according to figures from the Swedish Retail Institute (Handelns Utredningsinstitut - HUI).

Cafés' turnover rose by six percent. Although Swedes are eating more food on the go, cafes and restaurants dependent on automobile traffic made a turnover loss of two percent.

HUI's report into spending habits also claims that Swedes' "growing concern for the country's economic developement in connection with rising prices and interest rates has forced households to keep an eye on their spending. Growth is still positive though and the prognosis is positive".

HUI also noted that sales in gaming and tobacco shops rose by 2.5 percent.
