Andrey Silnov of Russia won the men's high jump gold medal, with a best of 2.36m. However, he failed three times at 2.42m in an attempt to better the Olympic record of 2.39m set by American Charles Austin at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Germaine Mason of Britain won silver with 2.34m on countback from Russian Yaroslav Rybakov, who took bronze.

32-year-old Stefan Holm won a gold medal at the Olympics in Athens 2004 and was one of Sweden's highest hopes for Beijing.
