Germany plans reconstruction conference for Georgia

Germany is working on a proposal for a reconstruction conference for Georgia involving the European Union and Georgia's neighbours, a government spokesman said Monday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili discussed the idea in talks in Tbilisi on Sunday, which foresees a conference under the working title "Reconstruction and Stability in Georgia and the Region," spokesman Thomas Steg told a news conference.

The conference would take place in the framework of the EU's neighbourhood policy, aimed at strengthening ties with the bloc's neighbours and which already includes Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, Steg said.

"This cristallized as an idea to an extent yesterday (Sunday)," Steg said. "This week it will be developed at working level and then discussed with the French presidency at the appropriate level."

Large amounts of Georgian civilian infrastructure have been destroyed in recent days by the Russian military as it rolled into Georgia after ejecting the Georgian army from the breakaway republic of South Ossetia.
