The acting director general for political affairs at the Swedish foreign ministry, Mats Staffansson, told Mikhail Skupov that Russia's conduct in Georgia was "unacceptable and contravenes the international regulatory framework," a ministry statement said.

"Sweden demands a withdrawal of all troops to the point that applied on August 6, before the start of the crisis ... (and) urges Russia to immediately agree to a ceasefire and to break off hostilities," it said.

The Swedish government was "most concerned about the hardship endured by the local population and internally displaced persons in the crisis area."

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, whose country holds the chairmanship of the Council of Europe, travelled on Monday to Georgia for talks with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili to push for an end to the conflict.
