Hate-crime murderer appeals life sentence

A 35-year-old man sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a 43-year-old homosexual man and the attempted murder of another homosexual man has appealed against his sentence.

He argues that the sentence should be significantly shorter.

The man was found to have taken advantage of homosexual men's sexual disposition in order to rob them. The Stockholm District Court established during the trial that the victims were humiliated because of their sexual disposition, making their ordeals a hate crime.

However, the 35-year-old convicted murderer claims he never had such a motive and only admits to theft and grievous bodily harm.

The convicted man has also demanded that the Court of Appeal allow the National Board of Health of Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to give its view on a report showing that he does not suffer from any serious psychological condition.
