Nigerian armed group renews threat to German building firm
Nigeria's most prominent militant group on Sunday renewed a threat to carry out deadly attacks on the foreign staff of Julius Berger PLC, a local unit of German construction giant Bilfinger Berger.
"The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) reiterates its previous position warning to the staff of Julius Berger Plc to vacate from all on-going project sites in ... Abuja from 0001 hrs on Monday, August 11, 2008 until further notice," the group said in an email to the media.
MEND first made the threat on Monday, apparently in a bid to pressure the company from resuming work in the oil-rich Niger delta. It halted operations there last month after two German staff members were taken hostage by unknown gunmen.
"Disregarding our threat will be putting the expatriate staff nationwide including the two currently being held hostage at risk, for which the management of Julius Berger should be held liable," MEND said.
