Although conditions improved somewhat overnight, some 11,000 households, mostly in the south, were still without electricity at 5am on Tuesday.

Storm force winds in the west were matched by torrential rainfall in the south, which had as much rainfall in one evening as it usually has in a month.

Helsingborg, for example, saw 60 millimeters of rain over the course of Monday evening.

Strong winds did however began to relent in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"At least on the west coast. It is still raining however in a lot of places even if the rain is starting to ease off," said Sylvia Lindström from meteorological agency SMHI at 5am.

By then the low pressure belt had reached the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. Weather conditions are expected to improve over the course of Tuesday, with Västra Götaland expected to clear up over the course of the day.

"It will take a while but towards the evening the cloud cover should begin to clear and the winds should ease off," said Lindstörm.

SMHI expects eastern parts to remain cloudy for all of Tuesday.
