The entire top floor of a seven story building was burned, and flames could be seen from a long distance.

The alarm for the fire on Burgårdsgatan came in shortly after 11pm on Sunday night.

According to witnesses, the fire started in an apartment on the sixth floor, and then spread up to the building’s seventh floor attic.

By midnight, the entire 50-metre long attic was engulfed in flames.

More than 40 firefighters worked to put out the blaze. Gothenburg-area emergency service workers received help from departments from the nearby towns of Borås, Alingsås, Kungälv and Bollebygd.

By 4am Monday morning, it appeared as if firefighters had succeeded in containing the fire.

“It’s still burning, but we’ve put out most of it and we have the fire pretty much under control right now,” said lead firefighter Peder Lindström to the TT news agency.

Residents were evacuated and busses brought in for those who had no other place to go.

Police have blocked up the area, interrupting both automobile and tram service on Södra vägen.

The fire was so violent that roofing tiles and parts of the roof’s structure fell to the ground, damaging several cars.

There were no reports of injuries.
