Rough weather heads for central Sweden

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has warned that violent thunderstorms are expected to hit central Sweden late on Monday.

SMHI has issued a class 1 storm warning for areas of Dalarna and Östergötland as a cold front draws in across the south of the country and makes its way north.

"It is not certain that everywhere will be hit but it is sufficiently unstable for us to issue a warning," said Sten Laurin to news agency TT.

A class 1 storm warning from SMHI is the second most severe storm warning with regard to thunder and lightning. The warning defines a storm which carries with it "certain risks for the general public and disruption to some public services."

The approaching cold front and accompanying thunderstorm is likely to bring with it heavy rainfalls.

An average of five people get injured in thunderstorms each year in Sweden. This year the figure has already reached 13.

"Each summer we have a number of violent thunderstorms, it is difficult to determine if these were worse than normal," said Anna Österman at SMHI to Svenska Dagbladet.
