A UK charter flight was forced to land in Frankfurt this week after two drunken British women attacked cabin staff with a vodka bottle and tried to open the emergency exit at an altitude of 10,000 metres, German police said on Friday.

The plane was on its way from Greece to Manchester when it made the emergency landing in Frankfurt, where German police arrested the two women.

According to police, one of the women attempted to open the emergency exit at altitude "to catch some fresh air" on Wednesday evening. The 26-year-old went on to attack a flight attendant with a vodka bottle after she and her 27-year-old pal were denied alcohol.

The 26-year-old will likely face charges of interference in air traffic and and attempted assault on the XL Airways flight.

The Boeing 737 continued its journey after an hour in Frankfurt.

The two intoxicated women may face a bill from the airline for costs incurred during the emergency landing.
