Prosecutor backs FRA: 'No breach of the law'

The public prosecutor has decided not to conduct a preliminary investigation against FRA for breach of electronic communication legislation. FRA was reported to the police following a Sveriges Television news broadcast on June 16th.

The office of the public prosecutor (Åklagarmyndigheten) has decided not to follow up the police report against the Swedish National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) as it considers there to be no case.

"To access electronic radio communication broadcast on the airwaves can not be considered a breach of the law on electronic communication," said Agnetha Hilding Qvarnström at the prosecutor's office in her decision which came already on July 10th.

FRA was reported to the police by a private individual following a a broadcast on Sveriges Television's (SVT) new program Rapport on June 16th.

The program contained a an interview with FRA general-director Ingvar Åkesson. Åkesson was alleged to have said that FRA has been collecting information on Swedish citizens' private telephone and e-mail for some time.
