Just one week after the new Apple iPhone 3G hit the German market on July 11, customers are pressing their noses to empty display cases in T-Mobile stores. Delivery bottlenecks at Apple mean the company can't supply its German partner with enough phones to meet demand, German daily Die Welt reported Thursday.

"There isn't a Telekom store that has an iPhone left," a T-Mobile spokesperson told the paper, adding that she wasn't exactly sure when the delivery delays would be alleviated. "We are working hard to find ways to get fresh supplies," she said.

T-Mobile is the only mobile phone company that carries the American gizmo, and their spokesperson said they already had a pre-order waiting list of more than 1,000 customers. But there are indications that a new shipment could arrive within the next few days, she said. The 8-gigabyte version starts at €169.95 ($270.08) in Germany.

Die Welt reported that T-Mobile store workers are saying Apple didn't deliver as many phones of the improved UMTS network phones as the company ordered. T-Mobile said that they sold more than 15,000 iPhones on the first day, and some stores reported selling out of the new iPhone on opening day.

Only 10,000 of the first model sold on its first day.

On July 14, Apple reported it had sold one million new iPhones worldwide the first weekend after its debut, and analysts expect the sleek new phone will reach some 10.5 million customers in the next year.

"iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, in a statement. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world."

The new iPhone 3G is said to be twice as fast as the first model, with a built in GPS system and new 2.0 software that can run scores of third-party applications available online.
