US presidential candidate Barack Obama will not speak in Berlin next week in front of the city’s landmark Brandenburg gate, the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper reported on Thursday.

According to the daily, the presumptive Democratic nominee will hold a major speech on July 24 near either Berlin’s city hall building or the Victory Column monument.

The paper cited Gert Weisskirchen, the foreign policy spokesman from the centre-left Social Democrats, as saying that a final decision by Obama’s team in Germany was imminent.

Although Obama’s stop in the German capital has been warmly welcomed by politicians from both the left and right, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed reservations over letting Germany’s symbolic Brandenburg Gate become a backdrop for the US election campaign.

The paper reported Obama will land at 11 am next Thursday at Berlin’s Tegel airport before heading to consultations with Merkel at the Chancellery. He will also meet with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
