Linna appointed new 'Super Ombudsman'

Katri Linna has been appointed as the new 'Super Omdudsman' and director-general of the new discrimination authority, the Minister for Integration and Gender Equality, Nyamko Sabuni, announced at a press conference on Thursday.

The new Ombudsman against Discrimination (DO) and director-general will work from the Government Offices and will begin preparation for the integration of the four current discrimination ombudsmen to be completed in time for the beginning of 2009, according to a department press release.

The new authority will unite the offices of the Ombudsman against Ethnic Discrimination (DO), the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman (Jämo), the Disability Ombudsman (HO) and the Ombudsman against Sexual Discrimination (HomO).

The Minister for Integration and Gender Equality, Nyamko Sabuni, announced the changes to the administration of the ombudsman offices in March 2007. The government also presented a new proposal for a new law to combat discrimination. The new law is scheduled to come in to force on January 1st 2009.

Katri Linna currently occupies the post of Ombudsman against Ethnic Discrimination.
