20-year-old dies after police cell suicide bid

A 20-year-old man has died a week after he hanged himself in police custody in Uppsala.

The man, who was from Gävle, was found hanging from a fitting on a toilet door in his cell. He was taken directly to hospital but the lack of oxygen had already caused severe brain damage.

"Our officers had seen the man just 30 minutes before he was found, which is a shorter interval than normal," said police superintendent Tommy Bringholm to TV4 Nyheterna Uppland.

The suicide attempt at the beginning of last week was the second this year in the Uppsala facility, prompting a number of measures to prevent more incidents. The toilet doors have been removed from detention cells and the police are considering installing a new monitoring system.

The police's own internal investigation department in Västerås has been asked to investigate whether Uppsala police could have done more to prevent the suicides.
