Child killer should not go to jail - lawyer

A recommendation that child murderer Anders Eklund should serve a jail sentence should be overturned, his lawyer has said. The killer should instead be placed in a secure psychiatric hospital, defence attorney Leif Silbersky has argued.

Eklund, who has admitted murdering 10-year-old Engla Juncosa Höglund and 31-year-old Pernilla Hellgren, has a serious psychiatric problem, Silbersky said. He demanded a review of the ruling by the National Board of Forensic Medicine (RMV) that his client was not seriously mentally disturbed at the time of the crime. The decision means that Eklund can be jailed.

“I believe that other experts could come to a different conclusion, that is to say that Eklund had a psychiatric disturbance at the time of the crimes and that he continues to suffer from a severe psychiatric illness,” Silbersky said.

Silbersky on Wednesday submitted a request to Falun District Court for the RMV decision to be reviewed. Any review would be carried out by the legal committee of the National Board of Health and Welfare. Silbersky asked for the review to be carried out immediately after evidence is heard in the trial, saying that evidence would be presented in court which would shed light on Eklund’s mental health.
