Sweden Democrat used Nazi propaganda

The Sweden Democrats have landed in hot water after one of their representatives published an article on the party's website using phrases borrowed from a neo-Nazi group.

The Sweden Democrats have tried hard in recent years to shed their reputation as a party with underlying xenophobic tendencies. But the new message appears to have eluded Samuel Älgemalm, a council representative in Växjö, who replicated entire sentences from the openly racist Nationalsocialistisk Front's (NSF) homepage.

Älgemalm's article dealt with plans to block the construction of a new mosque, Dagens Nyheter reports.

Using the very same words as the NSF, Älgemalm wrote:

"In the long term the Swedish people are threatened with extinction as a result of miscegenation, low fertility rates, increased numbers of abortions and other aspects that have a negative effect on our people."

Älgemalm claimed that his use of phraseology identical to NSF's was purely accidental.

But party leader Jimmie Åkesson was keen to distance himself from the article.

"We regard this as very serious and it will be investigated," Åkesson told Dagens Nyheter via his press secretary Martin Kinnunen.

"Even if he didn't use NSF as a source it is completely unacceptable to write articles like this, using terms such as 'miscegenation'. That's not something we support. NSF is a small Nazi sect whose values we do not share," said Kinnunen.

Recent polls have indicated that the Sweden Democrats stand a reasonable chance of clearing the four percent threshold necessary to gain a foothold in the Swedish parliament at the 2010 elections.
