Sami reindeer herders in northern Sweden have complained at the growing trend of spreading the cremated remains of dead relatives in the mountains.

A group of reindeer herders in Vilhelmina in northern Sweden have appealed a decision by the county administrative board (Länstyrelsen) to permit the practice. The Sami herders have taken their case to the county administrative court.

"This has become a working environment problem for us. We think that it unpleasant to be in and walk over areas where people are buried," said Tomas Nejne of the Vilhelmina Sami village (Sameby) to local newspaper Västerbottens-Kuriren.

The Sami village thinks that the board have taken the matter too lightly. The board's decision means that the cremated remains of a further two people will be cast to the wind over the mountains if the Sami's appeal is unsuccessful.
