The newly formed War Crimes Commission has launched four preliminary investigations into people living in Sweden who are suspected of committing war crimes during the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia.

The new police unit began working in March and has nine employees. Four prosecutors from the International Public Prosecution Office in Stockholm also have strong links to the Commission.

There are around 1,000 suspected war criminals living in Sweden, according to an estimate last year from a leading figure at the National Investigation Department.

Sweden is home to large groups of refugees from a number of war zones, including Iraq and Afghanistan. The country previously received large numbers from the former Yugoslavia.
