Large sections of Stockholm’s Arlanda airport were blocked off on Wednesday as technicians worked to remove a suspected bomb.

The suspicious object was discovered around 9.30am in terminal 5, Arlanda’s international terminal.

“They found a canister near the special check in counter at terminal 5 but there isn’t any known threat in connection with this,” said Åke Henriksson of the Arlanda police force to the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper.

Bomb technicians rushed to the scene, and firefighters and ambulance personnel were also on hand.

Technicians successfully transported the object away from the airport shortly after 2pm.

Flights and passengers were not been affected by the blockade, however, which was lifted around 3pm.

Officials couldn’t yet comment on what the suspicious object might have been.

“We’re now awaiting the bomb technicians’ investigation,” said the police’s Jan Sommar to the TT news agency.
