Half of all Germans are in favour of digital fingerprints for their new identity cards, according to a survey by weekly newsmagazine Focus.

Ten percent of those asked were undecided and 40 percent were against adding such personal information. A slim majority of 51 percent of western and 44 percent of eastern Germans would prefer identity cards including their fingerprint.

The survey was carried out by pollsters Polis/USUMA and it questioned 1,009 people.

The German government has agreed not to make the digitalization of fingerprints compulsory for the new electronic identity cards after there were privacy protection concerns within the ruling coalition.
