Storms slam Bavaria
Storms in Bavaria on Thursday caused heavy motorway damage and sent one woman to the hospital after she was struck by lightning.
The 63-year-old Dutch woman, who was camping in the lower Bavarian town of Kirchham, was hit by lighting while she was walking her dog. The bolt apparently struck the tip of her umbrella, causing her to suffer burns so serious she had to be sent to a special clinic in Munich.
Heavy rains also partially closed the A8 motorway between Munich and Stuttgart, according to police. The damage to the road was so severe in one direction that it will remain closed until at least Friday afternoon.
Storms wreaked havoc in several German states on Wednesday night with widespread lightning and flooding. Police in Bavaria near Coburg needed boats to save motorists from their cars on the B4 roadway. The authorities in Saxony on Thursday reported that torrential rains caused mudslides and uprooted trees blocked roads.
“There was occasionally zero visibility,” a spokesman for Saxony’s transportation warning service said.
Two people died in Rhineland-Palatinate midday on Wednesday due to the storms, police reported on Thursday. One man is thought to have been struck by lightning and a woman died in an auto accident caused by heavy rains. In Mainz, several people were trapped in their cars by floodwaters.
