Swedish car show to feature drive-thru weddings
Swedes looking for a drive-thru wedding need not catch a flight to Las Vegas.
Instead, cupid-struck car enthusiasts can simply head to the Power Big Meet car show in the central Swedish town of Västerås over the July 4th weekend.
Visitors to Power Big Meet, billed as the largest outdoor car show in the world, can opt for a drive-thru wedding on Friday evening, complete with flashing red neon, an Elvis impersonator, and gospel choir.
Thirty couples have already expressed an interest in pulling up to the Vegas-style chapel to be set up in a parking lot near the grounds of the show, according to the Göteborgs-Posten (GP) newspaper.
Eight ministers from the Church of Sweden, led by Jerker Alsterlund of Önsta Parish, will be on hand to help couples tie the knot from the comfort of their front seat.
Alsterlund, himself the owner of three classic cars and a long-time Big Power Meet attendee, came up with the idea for having drive-thru weddings at the show several years ago.
He sees drive-thru nuptials as a cost-effective way for couples concerned about the spiraling costs of traditional weddings.
“Today the trend with wedding is in the more expensive direction, many couples resist getting married because there are so many expectations and costs, but the Church of Sweden has no interest in expensive weddings, we want to be there for everyone,” he told GP.
I’m interested in cars myself, so for me the choice was simple; this is my way to make marriage more accessible.”
Ingela Hultgren and Tobias Eriksson from Oxelösund on Sweden’s east coast, along with their 10-month-old daughter Nova, plan on taking Alsterlund up on his offer.
“We love being odd and have always talked about getting married at the Power Big Meet,” they told the newspaper.
Couples need not register ahead of time, but they need to make sure to have proper documentation from the Swedish tax authorities.
