Swedish town chosen for international potato academy

The United Nations has declared 2008 the international year of the potato and now the lovable spud is set to have its own academy seated in Alingsås in western Sweden.

The idea behind the academy, Academia Solanum Tuberosum, is to have representatives from the entire industry who will work to spread knowledge about the potato in a variety of ways.

And Alingsås is a natural place for the newly created academy, as it is where Jonas Alströmer planted the first potato in Sweden in 1723.

Among the academy’s representatives is A M Alströmer, a descendant of Sweden’s pioneering potato planter.
