Tax dodging estate agents to face the law

Dozens of estate agents in the Stockholm area have been reported to the police for allegedly withholding money from the tax authorities.

In an audit of 118 estate agents, 91 were found by the tax office (Skatteverket) to have failed to declare a combined total of 61 million kronor ($10 million) in commission, Metro reports.

"Estate agents haven't had the best of reputations when it comes to taxes and this shows that there are indeed significant shortcomings," Carin Borgar, a divisional manager at Skatteverket, told Metro.

The tax authority followed up on properties that went on the market from 2005 to 2007 and found that estate agents had neglected to declare the commission earned on hundreds of sales.

One estate agency in particular is suspecting of retaining tens of millions of kronor in commission.
