Rising grocery prices force Germans to shop at discounters

Rising food and energy costs have the notoriously frugal Germans turning to discount grocers for their staples.

More than half of Germans said they have changed their shopping habits as a result of pricier goods, weekly news magazine Stern reported on Wednesday.

According to the poll conducted by social research firm Forsa, 55 percent of Germans said they are now looking for special discounts and heading to discount grocery stores.

Some 44 percent of the poll’s 1,003 participants said the recent price hikes had not affected their spending habits.
