You may have noticed a few dump trucks unloading several tons of sand in front of the Hauptbahnhof recently. The sand sculpture festival technically began Sunday, when twenty-four of the world's best carvers started working, but the climax occurs this Thursday when the champion is announced. Be there by 2 pm to vote for your favourite, then relax in the sun until dusk when the DJs set up.

Stadtgründungsfest

A small group of monks settled in the region now called Munich in the 8th century. But on June 14, 1158, Duke Henry the Lion officially founded the city. To celebrate 850 years, craft stalls and performance stages will be set up on Marienplatz for two days of festive fun.
