Traffic chaos expected in Stockholm on Friday
Police are warning Stockholm-area motorists to leave their cars at home on Friday as student celebrations and departing VIPs are expected to clog the city’s streets.
Thousands of rowdy students are expected to be riding through the streets of Stockholm on Friday and much of the city centre will remained blocked off due to the Iraq conference.
Students from more than 20 Stockholm area high schools will be celebrating graduation on Friday.
Traditionally, students mark the occasion by donning white caps and banding together to hire gaudy floats which are then towed slowly through the city blaring loud music and making frequent stops.
“There are probably going to be a lot of traffic problems, like there are every year even without the blocked-off areas. Preparations include having 1,700 police in service on Friday to handle the graduation parties,” said police spokesperson Ann-Sofie Ahlberg.
The traffic blockades near the Hotel Sheraton and nearby government offices adjacent to Stockholm’s central train station will remain in place on Friday, said Ahlberg.
“We don’t know exactly how many student floats there will be. There are usually quite a few, and there are more and more every year. As a result, people should avoid driving their cars. The trailers drive around and honk—and create long traffic lines when they stop,” she added.
And if that weren’t enough, Saturday’s Stockholm marathon will make for yet another tough driving day, which last year featured more than 15,000 participants running through the city’s streets.
