Perrelli in Eurovision fiasco
Charlotte Perrelli finished a lowly 18th in Saturday's Eurovision song contest in Belgrade. Russia won the competition the first time.
Hotly tipped Perrelli, singing an upbeat disco hit "Hero," said afterwards that she was happy with her performance and that it would have been worse to have come fourth or fifth.
"We couldn't have done any better. We laughed our way through the voting because we felt that we were never in contention. We never had a chance."
Perrelli was gracious in defeat and in response to the inevitable press speculation over partial voting among neighbouring countries she replied:
"The people simply wanted something else. We didn't have what they wanted. It is that simple."
Greece took an early lead in the voting while Sweden had to wait for the fifth round and Bosnia before scraping together two points. Malta stood for Perrelli's only perfect 12. Sweden's entry managed eventually to accumulate a modest total of 47 points.
When the voting was completed it was clear that Russia's Dima Bilan with his violin and rollerblade combo "Believe" had won this year's Eurovision with a whopping 272 points.
The Eurovision circus will therefore be heading to Moscow next year. Sweden will be left to analyze this year's Eurovision fiasco, regroup and try again.
