“Imams can have an important role in integration. Many visitors to mosques turn to their religious leaders with questions related to Swedish society,” said Minister for Higher Education and Research Lars Leijonborg in a statement.

Leijonborg explained in a press conference that Muslim organizations in Sweden have sought a dialogue with the government for several years about the recruitment and educating of imams.

Örebro University political science professor Erik Amnå is to head the investigative commission, which will survey and analyze the education needs for imams, as well as examine how the training of imams would be best accomplished within the Swedish system of education.

The commission is expected to deliver its report to the government on June 1st, 2009.
