Around 200 people including family, friends and schoolmates gathered at Sjärnsund church, in central Sweden. A further 70 people or so watched the funeral on screens outside the churchyard. The SVT broadcast has been the subject of much controversy, with many opinion makers voicing their outright disgust for making such a personal event into a public one.

For many of Engla’s schoolmates, Saturday’s funeral was part of coming to terms with her brutal and untimely death. Eva Larsson, head of Engla’s school in Sjärnsund told TT that the funeral was an important step in the healing process for them.

Engla was brutally murdered on the first weekend of April, cycling on her way home from a football match. Truck driver Anders Eklund, who has admitted to her killing, is in custody and awaiting trial.
