Swiss shock Swedes at Worlds
Thibault Monnet scored the winner early in the third as Switzerland upset reigning Olympic gold medallist Sweden 4-2 in the preliminary round of the World Hockey Championships on Wednesday.
Sweden, who wore their throwback jerseys from the 1957 world championships, looked anything but golden Wednesday at the Colisee arena in Halifax, Canada.
Backup goalie Stefan Liv registered a shutout against France but allowed four goals on 24 shots against Switzerland.
To make matters worse, defenceman Niclas Wallin was slapped with a two-game suspension for a hit to the head on Switzerland's Roman Wick.
The International Ice Hockey Federation announced the suspension, after Wallin was handed a match penalty for the hit late in the game.
A match penalty automatically carries a one-game suspension, but due to the severity of the hit, tournament's disciplinary committee decided to up the ban to two games.
Wick suffered a severe concussion and didn't know where he was for 10 minutes following the hit, the IIHF said. Wick is expected to be out for up to 10 days.
Sweden will be without Wallin for their qualifying round games against Denmark on Thursday and against Russia on Saturday.
