Making it in Sweden: the British professor
British physicist Mark Pearce has seen his career go from strength to strength since moving to Sweden with his Swedish girlfriend. He is now Professor of Physics at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

What do you do?
Professor of Physics, KTH. My specialization is astroparticle physics, which is a field of basic science concerned with studying the Universe using subatomic particles rather than light, as is the case in astronomy. I'm an experimentalist and build instruments which are sent into space on-board satellites and high altitude balloons. I also teach courses, and am presently Director of Undergraduate studies at the Physics Department.

What brought you to Sweden and when did you come?
Arrived July 1996, following in footsteps of Swedish girlfriend who I met in Geneva (see below).
What did you do before coming to Sweden?
PhD in experimental particle physics, University of Birmingham, UK and European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland.
How did you find your first job in Sweden?
Sent an e-mail to each research group in Sweden, looking for
vacancies. KTH answered first!
What's the best thing about working in Sweden?
The (all too few) months of daylight.
What's the worst thing about working in Sweden?
The (all too many) months of darkness
Do you speak Swedish at work?
Yes
Do you speak any other languages at work?
Yes, English since there are many foreign students.
